The Case
For eight years, members of the Friends of Yellow Creek have been volunteering to help Indiana County residents of all ages enjoy the recreational benefits of Yellow Creek Lake. Our Windy Wednesday, Get Outdoors PA, and other programs have introduced hundreds to the benefits of “getting out on the water” of Yellow Creek.
Our Community Sailing Base provides an economical means for visitors to learn to sail and paddle. We provide free instruction and access to boats and safety equipment. Sailing instruction confirms to the national US Sailing Certification standard, and member are able to attain this qualification at no additional cost.
Sailing and Paddling provide physical and mental wellness benefits. They promote fitness and agility, teach discipline and communication, encourage relaxation, and improve concentration.
Need
Will you consider becoming our partner in the 2019/2020 “Get out on the Water” campaign? We need your support to continue providing this level of service to the community and taking it to the next level!
Over the years, we have replaced docks, landscaped, replaced a roof, and installed picnic tables and kayak racks. We have refitted and maintain a half-dozen older boats. A significant, additional annual expense is our required liability insurance. This Fall we have undertaken our most ambitious project yet. After some forty years of accumulation, the “sailing cove” had silted in to the point that our dock system was sitting on dry mud much of the season. More than unsightly, this limited the ability of less athletic users to access the boats (which must be hauled down the shore, then boarded from deep water). We are now removing as much of the silt as feasible; rebuilding the docks; regrading the launch area; and installing a pre-basin to capture run-off before it enters the cove and the lake. This will produce an improvement in water quality and should help maintain accessibility in years to come.
